Compress an image toward 20KB

Start with a 20KB file-size target and adjust it in KB or MB if your application asks for something else. The selected file is processed locally in your browser.

A very small target can reduce visual quality or image dimensions. The tool reports the actual output and warns if it cannot meet the target. Always inspect the downloaded file and follow the official instructions for your application.

Starting target: 20KB. You can change the size before processing.

Add a file to begin

How to do this, step by step

  1. 1Select a supported image from your device. The page or processing code may need a connection to load, but the selected file is not uploaded for processing.
  2. 2Confirm the 20KB starting target or enter another limit using the KB/MB control. Choose the format requested by your application.
  3. 3Run the compressor. It may reduce image dimensions if needed to approach a byte target; the result card shows the actual dimensions and size.
  4. 4Open the downloaded image and check that faces, text and signatures remain legible. Compare both its dimensions and size against the current official requirements.

Understanding size and quality

KB and MB describe file size, not the width and height of the image. Different images at the same pixel dimensions can produce very different file sizes because their detail and compression settings differ.

JPEG and WebP use lossy compression when selected here; repeated exports can introduce visible artefacts. PNG is lossless, but changing dimensions still resamples the image. Start each attempt from your original file when possible.

Some target sizes cannot be reached with a particular image and format. The compressor may reduce dimensions for general size-targeting jobs, and reports the output rather than promising that every target is possible.

Check application rules separately

A portal can specify a minimum and maximum file size, exact pixel dimensions, file type and visual conditions. Meeting the byte cap alone does not prove the file will be accepted. If pixel dimensions must remain fixed, use a suitable specification preset and check the actual result.

When the optional exact-size control is on, the tool can add inert metadata padding to JPEG or PNG outputs to bring them close to the selected target. Some portals inspect or strip metadata differently. Turn that option off if the smallest file is preferable.

Keep personal documents private and upload the final file only to the intended application. A resized photograph cannot replace an official live-photo capture when one is required.

Frequently asked questions

Will every image reach 20KB?

No. The achievable size depends on the source, dimensions and format. The result card shows the actual file size and an explanation if the target could not be met.

Does the tool keep the original dimensions?

General target compression may reduce dimensions. Read the output dimensions, or use a fixed-dimension preset if the application requires a specific canvas.

Does the tool remove location metadata?

Re-encoding generally discards source EXIF metadata. Inspect the downloaded file if metadata removal is important; do not rely on it as a complete privacy or forensic guarantee.

Is the image sent to a processing server?

No. The selected file is processed in the browser. Loading the page or codec may require a network connection.
