Age eligibility for government jobs: cut-off dates, completed years and relaxation
Age eligibility looks like the simplest rule in any notification and causes an outsized share of rejected applications, because two things are easy to get wrong: the date your age is measured on, and the difference between the age you have completed and the age you are in.
This guide sets out how boards compute it, with worked examples, and the standard relaxation norms โ with the standing caveat that the notification for your recruitment is the only document that decides.
Age is measured on one date, in completed years
Every notification names a cut-off date โ commonly 1 January of the examination year, or the last date for submitting the application. Your age is your age on that date, counted in completed years. Being 27 years and 364 days old counts as 27, not 28, and boards do not round.
This is why "I will turn 28 next month" is not an argument anywhere. The counting stops at the cut-off date, and the fractional year is discarded in your favour โ for the lower bound it is discarded against you.
The standard notification phrasing is that a candidate must have been born not earlier than a stated date and not later than another. Those two dates are derived from the cut-off date and the age limits, and they are the operative rule. If the notification expresses eligibility as a date-of-birth window, that window governs โ not an age you calculated yourself.
| Cut-off date | Date of birth | Completed age | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January 2027 | 1 January 1995 | 32 years | Check the exact notice |
| 1 January 2027 | 2 January 1994 | 32 years | Check the exact notice |
| 1 January 2027 | 1 January 1994 | 33 years | Check the exact notice |
| 1 January 2027 | 1 January 2009 | 18 years | Check the exact notice |
Why one day decides the outcome
Compare 1 January 1994 and 2 January 1994 on a cut-off date of 1 January 2027. The first person has just turned 33; the second is still 32 and turns 33 the next day. Those are arithmetic examples, not a determination that either candidate is eligible.
The wording of a recruitment notice matters. A stated birth-date range, inclusive or exclusive boundary, category relaxation or special rule can change the answer. Do not infer a universal date-of-birth range merely from a headline upper age.
Compare your actual date of birth with the complete current notification. If you are near either boundary, ask the recruiting authority instead of relying on an independent calculator.
Standard upper-age relaxation
Relaxation is granted by category and is set out in the notification. The following are the norms used across central government recruitment, recorded here so you know what to look for; state recruitments often differ and some posts restrict relaxation to specified categories.
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years.
- SC and ST: 5 years.
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): 10 years, and this is cumulative with category relaxation where the notification permits it โ so a PwBD candidate in the OBC category can see 13 years, and in the SC/ST category 15 years.
- Ex-servicemen: the length of military service plus 3 years, subject to the upper age limit ceilings stated in the notification.
- Departmental or internal candidates: commonly 5 years, sometimes more, depending on the post.
- Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated who have not remarried: relaxation as specified, typically up to 35 years for general category candidates in certain recruitments.
Relaxation is a double-edged rule
Age relaxation is often applied to an upper limit only and only where the notification grants it. Check the actual clause and its conditions.
Do not assume a category relaxation changes the minimum age as well as the maximum. Read the full eligibility section and any exceptions for the specific recruitment.
The second is assuming a relaxed age limit can be carried to a different post. If a notification says relaxation applies to a post, it applies to that recruitment. Applying to a different vacancy with the same board means reading that vacancyโs notification, which may have a different age window and a different relaxation clause entirely.
Computing your age accurately
The computation is simple subtraction with one adjustment: if the current date has not yet reached this yearโs birthday, subtract one from the year difference. Born 14 March 1999, cut-off 1 January 2027: the year difference is 28, and since 1 January precedes 14 March, your completed age on the cut-off date is 27.
For a 29 February birth, this calculator uses 28 February as the anniversary in a non-leap year. Official or legal rules may use a different convention. If the result is close to a bound, check the notification and ask the recruiting authority.
Our age calculator takes your date of birth and any cut-off date and reports completed years, months and days, the day of the week you were born, and your next birthday. It runs entirely in your browser โ date of birth is a personal identifier, and it is not something worth sending to a strangerโs server to have subtracted from another date.
The one sentence that matters
Read the eligibility paragraph of your own notification, find the cut-off date and the date-of-birth window, and compare them to your birth certificate โ not to a website, including this one. Age windows are revised between cycles, relaxation clauses vary by post, and the notification is the document a scrutiny committee will open when it decides.
Frequently asked questions
Is age calculated as on 1 January or the last date of application?
It depends entirely on the notification. Many central recruitments use 1 January of the examination year; others use the closing date for applications. The notification states it explicitly โ look for the phrase "age as on".
Does OBC relaxation of 3 years apply to the minimum age?
Category relaxations are generally expressed as upper-age relaxations. Read the exact notice for the minimum age, upper limit and any exceptions; do not assume a relaxation applies to both.
Can relaxation be added together for PwBD candidates?
Where the notification permits, yes: a PwBD candidate in the OBC category is commonly allowed 3 + 10 years, and in the SC/ST category 5 + 10 years. Read the specific clause, because some notifications grant only the larger relaxation.
Does the age on my Aadhaar decide eligibility?
No. The date of birth on your matriculation or equivalent certificate is what recruitments use, and most notifications say so explicitly. Discrepancies between documents should be resolved long before you apply, not at document verification.
