UPSC photo and triple-signature upload: a practical guide
Preparing the documents for a UPSC application involves three different things: an existing passport-style photograph, a live photograph captured in the official application, and a signature image. They are separate steps; a file resizer cannot perform the live capture for you.
The official UPSC photo and signature instructions linked below are the reference for the figures in this guide. They can change, and an examination notice or application screen may add specific requirements. Read both for the cycle you are applying to before relying on any preset.
The published UPSC instructions at a glance
The official photo-and-signature instruction document checked on 1 November 2026 describes the following. It uses a pixel range for the signature, not a single compulsory 350 ร 500 canvas. Confirm the latest instructions and how the current portal applies the range.
| Item | What the cited instructions say |
|---|---|
| Photograph | JPG named photo; 20โ200 KB; recent, clear and with at least three-quarters face coverage. |
| Live photograph | Capture separately within the official application; follow its camera and matching instructions. |
| Signature | Exactly three handwritten signatures, vertically on one white sheet, scanned together as one JPG; 20โ100 KB; image dimensions 350โ500 pixels. |
Prepare the photograph
Use a recent, clear colour photograph that meets the visual instructions. The cited UPSC document describes a plain white background, a full face, open eyes and face coverage of at least three-quarters of the photo. It illustrates accepted and rejected examples, so inspect those examples rather than trying to infer every detail from a file-size table.
The CompressInKB photo preset uses a 350 ร 350 pixel canvas as one working choice. UPSCโs linked general photo instruction does not state that every photograph must be exactly 350 ร 350 pixels. Do not treat our chosen canvas as a universal official requirement; if your form gives a different dimension, follow the form and use a custom resizer.
The site can resize and compress a picture, but it cannot detect your face or measure the percentage of the frame it occupies. It also does not remove an opaque background. If the source photo has a coloured or patterned background, replacing it requires a suitable original photo or another appropriate process, subject to the official rules.
Complete the separate live photograph
UPSCโs instructions describe a live capture made from the current device or through the mobile option offered by the application. Follow the official screen prompts, grant camera permission to the official site if appropriate, and make sure the captured image is clear and resembles the uploaded photograph.
A resized photo from this site is not a live capture. Do not point the camera at a print or another screen as a substitute. If the camera does not open, check the browserโs site permissions, device camera and network connection, then use the help options provided by UPSC.
Write and scan the triple signature
The linked UPSC instructions say to sign three times, one below the other, on plain white paper with black ink. Leave enough space between the signatures, scan or photograph all three together, and ensure the resulting image is the right way up, clear and well lit.
Do not upload only one signature when the current instructions ask for three. Our triple-signature preset does not copy or generate signatures; it expects a single source image that already contains the three original handwritten examples. It fits the complete source into the canvas with white padding rather than stretching it.
Open the result and confirm that every signature is visible and legible. The official document gives a 20โ100 KB JPG window and a 350โ500 pixel dimension range. The preset uses 350 ร 500 pixels, but the notice and portal are the authority on how that range must be applied.
Choose a file size without sacrificing clarity
A byte limit is not a measure of how readable a document is. The result can meet the number and still have a shadow, a clipped signature or an unrecognisable face. After compression, zoom in and check the small details as well as the overall framing.
When a minimum size is specified, the resizer can add inert padding to some JPEG outputs. Some portals may strip or inspect metadata differently, so meeting the number in our result card is not a promise that an application portal will accept the file. Keep the original image and use the official portalโs feedback.
If the output cannot reach the selected byte limit while preserving the chosen dimensions, the tool flags the miss instead of silently shrinking the pixel canvas. Check whether the official instructions allow another size or use a better source image; do not lower readability merely to hit a number.
Before pressing submit
- Read the current notification and the portalโs upload instructions. Check whether the cited UPSC guidance has been updated.
- Check the photo and signature separately: actual JPEG format, file name, dimensions, byte size, orientation and legibility.
- Complete the live-photo step in UPSCโs application; do not replace it with an uploaded image.
- Keep a copy of the files you actually submitted as well as the originals. Store them privately and do not email sensitive identity documents to support.
- If the portal rejects a file, read its exact error and recheck the notice. If the message is unclear, use the official application help channel.
When another UPSC notice differs
Different UPSC recruitments and stages can use different instructions or require additional identity and supporting documents. A rule from one examination or year should not automatically be transferred to another. The notification for the application you are actually completing, together with any current corrigendum, is the first place to check.
Where a name, date, special format or other marking is requested, follow the wording of that notice. Do not add extra text simply because a guide for a different cycle recommends it. Likewise, check the official file-name rules: changing a file name is different from changing the image format, and renaming a PNG to JPG does not turn it into a JPEG.

Frequently asked questions
Is the triple signature only for people with short signatures?
No. The cited current UPSC instructions ask candidates for exactly three signatures arranged vertically. Check the notice and portal for your own application.
Does the tool create three signatures for me?
No. Write all three yourself on one sheet and upload a single image containing them. The resizer fits that source into its preset canvas.
Is a 350 ร 350 photo mandatory for every UPSC application?
The linked general photo instructions do not state that as a universal photo dimension. It is a working preset here; verify the specific notice and portal.
Can I use this tool instead of the live photograph?
No. Complete live capture in the official UPSC application wherever it is required.
Are the selected files uploaded for processing?
No. The selected image is processed in your browser. The page or processing code may be downloaded from the site, but those requests do not contain the selected file.
The file tools linked in this guide process selected files in your browser. No account or installation is required; a connection may be needed to load the page and processing code.
