How to use rotate pdf

  1. 1Add the PDF whose pages are the wrong way round.
  2. 2Choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees, and apply it to all, odd or even pages. There is no automatic orientation detection.
  3. 3Run it, download the PDF and open it in a viewer to check that the pages read the right way up.
  4. 4Download. Rotation is metadata-level, so nothing is re-encoded and the file does not lose quality.

Why this tool, and why browser-side

Scanner output is the usual culprit: a page fed the wrong way round, or a phone scan stored with the camera held sideways. Reading the document on a screen at an angle is annoying; sending it to a verification desk that way is a rejection risk.

Applying rotation before other edits is the efficient order. Rotate first, then split or extract, and you only fix the orientation once rather than in every output file.

Rotation is free. It changes how pages are displayed rather than the pixels themselves, so it can be applied as many times as you like without any quality cost — unlike compression, which spends a little each pass.

This tool exists for PDF documents handled in a hurry: no queue, no account, no upload, and a result you can verify on the spot. The explanation below is the same one we would give a colleague who asked how it works.

A habit worth keeping: before you upload anything produced here, open the result and check three things — the page count, that the first and last pages are the ones you expect, and that the smallest text on the densest page is still readable at 100%. That takes twenty seconds and catches the two failure modes that actually happen: a page quietly lost during a rebuild, and a target that was reached by making a scan unreadable.

Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are not supported by these tools. If you are authorised to do so, use your PDF reader to make an unlocked copy and try that copy instead. Preserve the original, especially if it has a digital signature.

Accepted inputs are PDF files up to 50 MB. SVG, HTML and other script-bearing formats are refused outright rather than sanitised, because a file that can execute code has no business being re-encoded — and an upload field that accepts one is a security hole rather than a feature. The tool works on one file at a time, which keeps the result unambiguous.

How it works under the hood

Each page carries a rotation value in its page dictionary. The tool adds the selected rotation to all, odd or even pages without rasterising their contents. It does not detect the correct orientation automatically; inspect the result. Rotation changes the page rotation entry rather than re-encoding the content. You can apply it to all, odd or even pages; there is no automatic orientation detection. Check the result in your intended viewer.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Rotation is stored as page metadata and applied when the page is drawn, so no pixel is re-encoded. The file size is essentially unchanged and repeated rotation costs nothing.

Can I rotate only some pages?

You can rotate all pages, odd pages or even pages. An arbitrary page range is not available in this workbench.

Why does my PDF still look sideways in one particular viewer?

Some old or strict readers ignore the rotation flag. If a portal rejects a rotated file, the reliable fallback is to render the pages to images and rebuild the document, which bakes the orientation in — at the cost of a text layer.

Does rotation change the page size?

A landscape page rotated to portrait keeps its dimensions and simply displays in the other orientation; the media box is not rewritten. If you need a genuinely portrait page, that is a different operation.

Can I rotate a scanned image the same way?

The separate image rotator decodes and rewrites pixels as JPEG. JPEG re-encoding is lossy, so start from the original and check the result.

Is my file uploaded to do this?

No. The rotation is written into the file structure in your browser. No request leaves the page carrying document data.

Can I fix the rotation of a password-protected file?

Not without the password. Owner-password files that open without one can be re-saved unrestricted, after which rotation works normally.

Do rotated pages print correctly?

Yes, as long as the print dialogue honours the page rotation, which every mainstream printer driver does. Print at actual size to avoid the fit-to-page scaling that shrinks forms.
