Inspect PDF structure, page count and size

Get a local report of page count, file size, page dimensions and common title, author, creator and producer fields. It is not a security scan.

PDF up to 50.00 MB

Reports page count, file size, common document properties and up to 200 page sizes. It does not scan for malware, attachments or hidden information.
This tool reads the document structure with pdf-lib: page count, page geometry, embedded metadata and file size. Use it to see what is inside a PDF before you compress or share it.

How to use pdf inspector

  1. 1Add an unencrypted PDF and run the inspector. The application parses it locally rather than uploading it.
  2. 2Read the result: page count, file size, title, author, creator and producer where present, plus the dimensions of up to 200 pages.
  3. 3Download the text report if you want a record. A dash means a listed property was not found or was empty.
  4. 4Use a separate PDF reader or specialist tool for hidden data, security and accessibility checks.

Why this tool, and why browser-side

Before compressing or splitting a PDF, page count and page sizes can help you understand what you are working with and what a recipient may see.

Common document properties can expose a title or author name. Reviewing these fields is useful before you share a file, although a basic report cannot reveal every source of identifying information.

Different page sizes in one bundle may lead to unexpected print scaling. A report is a starting point for identifying mixed page geometry.

This tool exists for PDF documents handled in a hurry: no queue, no account, no upload, and a result you can verify on the spot. The explanation below is the same one we would give a colleague who asked how it works.

Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are not supported by these tools. If you are authorised to do so, use your PDF reader to make an unlocked copy and try that copy instead. Preserve the original, especially if it has a digital signature.

Scanned documents behave differently from every other file you have. Each page is a photograph, typically 1–3 MB at 300 dpi in colour, with no text layer unless your scanner ran OCR. That means there is no lossless cleverness available — the bytes genuinely are the picture. The cheapest wins on a scan are usually cropping the grey table edge out of every page and turning off colour where the document is black ink on white paper.

Accepted inputs are PDF files up to 50 MB. SVG, HTML and other script-bearing formats are refused outright rather than sanitised, because a file that can execute code has no business being re-encoded — and an upload field that accepts one is a security hole rather than a feature. The tool works on one file at a time, which keeps the result unambiguous.

How it works under the hood

The tool opens the PDF with a local parser, reads the page count and common document-info fields, and groups page dimensions in PDF points for up to the first 200 pages. It does not count images, inspect their resolution, detect searchable text, list scripts or attachments, or scan for malware. Encrypted PDFs cannot be opened by this tool. The report lists page count, file size, common document-info fields and page dimensions for up to 200 pages. It does not audit attachments, scripts, fonts, image resolution or hidden data, and it is not a security scanner.

Frequently asked questions

What information is included?

Page count, total file size, title, author, creator, producer and grouped page dimensions for at most the first 200 pages.

Does it find every hidden item?

No. Attachments, scripts, hidden layers, comments and XMP are outside this report. Use a dedicated inspection tool when needed.

Can it detect malware?

No. The report is not a security scan, and a file that opens successfully is not necessarily safe.

Does it report embedded-image resolution?

No. The report shows page dimensions, not the pixel dimensions or resolution of images inside those pages.

Can I tell whether text is searchable?

Not from this report. Open the document in a PDF reader and try selecting or searching for text.

Can it inspect an encrypted PDF?

Encrypted PDFs are not supported. If you are authorised, make an unlocked copy with your PDF reader first.

Why are only some page sizes listed?

For large documents the report samples up to the first 200 pages. Later pages are included in the total count but not in the dimension summary.

Is the document uploaded?

No. It is parsed in the browser and the report is created locally. The application has no file-upload endpoint.
